Artificial grass is made from a blend of plastic granules and additives such as UV stabilisers and colouring agents. This blend is heated and pressed through an extruder head under pressure. With this process individual synthetic fibres are created. The shape of the fibres will be determined by the extruder head. There are basically two kinds of fibres: fibrillated and monofilament. The blend of synthetic materials used differs per product and supplier and it determines the quality of the end product.
Once the grass fibres have been made, the blades are strengthened. They are resistant to strong tractive force and temperature fluctuations between -50 Cº and +50 Cº. The grass fibres are then coiled around large spools (bobbins) and shipped to the different artificial turf manufacturers. A major manufacturer of artificial grass is TenCate in Almelo.
When the bobbins get to the manufacturer they are placed on a machine which pushes the blades of grass over a width of 4 metres with needles into the backing.
This machine can be compared to a sewing machine and this process is called tufting. Several factors, for instance the type of fibre, the height, distance between the needles of the machine, play a role in the appearance of the turf and the applications it can be used for. A liquid is added to attach the grass fibres to the backing. It is then put in the oven to harden and to fixate the fibres. At this point, the grass roll can be called artificial turf and is ready to be sold and installed.

ROYAL GRASS PRODUCTION
Landscape Solutions B.V. is the manufacturer of Royal Grass. The fibres used are produced exclusively by TenCate for Royal Grass. Find out more on our page About Royal Grass. We offer different kinds of artificial grass products that have been designed specifically for private gardens, public landscaping and playgrounds. Royal Grass is a patented and protected trademark. We have been using the production process described above since the introduction of artificial grass in the 1970s.
POWERED BY TENCATE IN THE NETHERLANDS
Landscape Solutions B.V. and TenCate have been working together to develop a totally new and innovative production process. This innovative process has as greatest advantage that the artificial grass can be made 100% recyclable. Currently, products from this new production line are only available in limited quantities. As there are pending patent applications, we cannot disclose this process yet. You can recognise these sustainable products by the e-qual® certification label.
